THE TURF.

CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

CONCLUDING EVENTS

(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Tlie Carnival Week festivities opened at Riecarton on Saturday, with the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. The morning broke unfavourable, with rain, and there were some heavy showers at intervals. By noon, however, the weather laid cleared, and the racing was disposed of in pleasant conditions. The attendance was small for the first race and though it increased later, the crowd did not appear to be so large as usual at any period of the day. The totalisator investments were £48,674 10s, compared with £63,776 on Cup Day last year. A substantial drop had been anticipated, and under the circumstances the figures were quite up to expectations. The New Zealand Cup provided an interesting contest, and the success of the top weight, Nightrqarch, who was a hot favourite, was very popular. The three-year-old, Autopay, registered a smart performance in winning the Stewards’ Handicap, while Tea Chat showed unexpected stamina to beat the favourite, La Toupee, by a very narrow margin in the Welcome Stakes.
