AMERICA’S CUP CONTESTS
ALTERATION NECESSARY. United Press Association— Copyright:) (Received This Day, 8.50 a.m.) ■ NEW YORK. Sept. 19. “The machines in the hull of the Enterprise did things no human being could equal,” are the words of . one American yachting expert, explaining the defeat of the Shamrock V., thus epitomising the traditional interest of the defenders of the America s Cun to retain the trophy always and The American aim in sport to win rather than play games for the games sake. The patent boom, duraluminium mast, special winches to the register strain on the sails, etc., .were some of the devices employed in the Enterpnse, while the Shamrock depended on manpower. . . . There is no widespread satisfaction in the Enterprise’s victory. In. Amer- • icalisati-on it is evident that the conditions have always favoured the defender. The necessity for building, a boat to conform to American specifications and for sailing her across the seas of her own bottom, and for racing her along a coast where the peculiarities of weather and wind cannot possibly be familiar to the challenger’s skipper will always conspire to keep the Cup in America. The introduction of the mechanical element, which makes possible infinite surprises, seems to be a clinching factor. Americans themselves are beginning to understand that entire overhauling of the point of view under which the races ane conducted will be necessary before the America’s Cup contests can prove true sporting events.
