Eight players contested the quarterfinals of the State amateur golf championship at Cheltenham links to-day. Ryan beat Withers, 5 up and 4. Ivo Whitton beat Sloan Morpeth (the title-holder), 4 up and 2. Nettleford beat Butte, 5 and 4. Edgar beat Jackson, 3 and 2. LADIES' STROKE MATCH. A stroke match will be played by the ladies of the Ashburton Golf Club tomorrow. The draw is as follows: — Mrs R. Kennedy v. Mrs H. Vezey, Mrs F. M. Brodie v. Miss Nicoll, Mrs Jk B. Nicoll v. Miss Bonnington, Mrs J. Lane v. Mrs EL B. Condell, Mrs W. R. Lane v. Miss Brown, Miss A. Madden v. Mrs Mulligan, Mrs E. Orr v. Miss J. Newton, Mrs J. M. Mcßae v. Mrs Smith, Mrs F. W. Seldon v. Mrs W. Thomas. Mrs S. J. Thomas with scorer. Unqualified players will select partners and do a score and ringer. THE RAKAIA CLUB. The Rakaia Golf Club's August medal match was played on Saturday in fine weather. There was keen competition. The results -were:—A. Christianson 70 (gross), 6 (handicap), 64 (net) ; L. 0. Oakley 90, 24, 66; A. Corbitt 87, 21, 6G; P. J. Hanrahan 85, IS. 67; J S. Connollv 89, 18, 71; D. Fihlay 92, 20, 72; G. S, Hardy 95, 20, 75: C. W. Browne 88, 11, 77; J. Langley 104, 24, 80;. L. Cordner 10-1, 20, 84. A. Christianson, who returned a card .of 4 below his handicap, is reduced to a five handicap. The following also reduced their handicaps:—L. O. Oakley by 2 strokes, A. Corbitt by 2 strokes, and P. Hanrahan by 1 stroke. The second qualifying round of the championship .was played concurrently with the medal match, and'the final qualifying round will be played next Saturday. The following is the draw: —C. C.
