COUNTY CENTRES

(From Our Own Correspondents.) MAYFIELD. The annual ball of the Loyal Mayfield Lodge, M.U., L0.0.F.. was held in the Band Hall on Friday evening and, like its predecessors, was a most successful function. Visitors were present from St. Andrew's, Woodbury, Geraldine, Temuka, Mount Somen, and Ashburton, the hall being taxed to ts utmost. Music was supplied by Kelland's orchestra, of Temuka, who were most generous in responding to the numerous encores. The annual church parade of the Loyal Mayfield Lodge was held on Sunday. The Ashburton Silver Band led the parade to the Band Hall, where the service was conducted bv the Rev. A. D. Kirkland (Presbyterian), who took for his text "Loyalty." At the conclusion the band led the'parade to the schoolgrounds, where a programme of band music was much enjoved by a large gathering. Beautiful mild weather was experienced djnring the week-end, Sunday being a particularly warm, sunny spring day. PENOARVES. The Pendarves Tennis Club held its annual meeting in the hall, there being a good attendance. The president (Mr James Lambie), who presided, retired to the successful result of the club s first year's operations, and to the splendid gift of the land on which. the courts stand, this having been given vby the Hampton family. The balancesheet, which was read by the secretary L (Mr J. L. Bush), showed a credit balance of about £lO. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr J. Lambie; captain, Mr C. H. Hampton; secretary, Mr J. L. Bush; last year s .vice-presidents were re-elected, with the addition of Mr A. P. Bruce It was decided to hold a dance in September.. RUAPUNA On Sunday afternoon in the hall Miss Hanoox was presented with a Bible from the Ruapuna Sunday School and Bible Class as a small token ot the high esteem in which she is held. As superintendent she has done valuable work in the Sunday School and Bible Class. The Ruapuna School basketball team motored to Carew to play the return match. The result was an easy victory for Carew. RAKAIA. The children of the Rakaia Public School have been practising for some time for a concert, which is to be held in aid of the dental clinic fund. The first part of the programme will be given by the children, and the second part by local amateurs. On Saturday afternoon the children of St. Mark's Sunday School, with • their teachers, assembled in the schoolroom to do honour to Miss Margaret Henderson, who is shortly to be married. On behalf of those present, Mr Barlow presented Miss Henderson with a pretty toilet set, and thanked her for her services as teacher in the Sunday School for a number of years. Mr Barlow wished Miss Henderson happiness and prosperity in the future. Miss Ecbington (superintendent of the Sunday School School) and Mrs R. Breach also expressed their appreciation of Miss Henderson's work. Afterwards an enjoyable time was spent in games. Afternoon tea was provided by the 1 SIQIGS A well attended and very enjoyable social was held in St. Mark's Schoolroom on Saturday evening by the Ladies' Guild. Competitions were Avon by Mrs Tatterson and Mr A. C. Rvan, and a consolation prize was presented to Mrs Turton. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr T. Lawler, and extras were played by Mr A. Pluck. At the weekly social of the Rakaia Football Club competitions were won by Mrs T. Clark and Mr A.* Wells.
