SPORTS CLUB

ALLENTON ACTIVITIES. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The annual meeting of the Alknton Sports Club was held in. the club's pavilion last evening, when the president (Mr E. C. Bathurst) presided over a good attendance. The report stated that last season was marked by the improvement in the property of the club and progress in the different sections. The club congratulated the croquet section on its, success in the "C" flag competition. The club expressed its deep regret at the loss it had sustained in the death of Mr Pringle Walker (patron), who had lieen a member since the inception of the club, and who had always taken a keen interest in its activities. The grounds had been opened for play on October 26/ when there was a large attendance, including representatives of kindred clubs. The membership showed an increase of five compared with last year, the total now being 126, as follows: Botvling 36, croquet 28, tennis 53, honorary members 9. It was not a wholly satisfactory position, as, with the present membership, the subscriptions did not cover the working and maintenance expenses by approximately £7O. It would be necessary for the club to take steps to improve the financial position. As the sports grounds could accommodate a larger number than at present a vigorous endeavour should be made to increase the membership. Several improvements were carried out at the "■rounds, and these would be appreciated by members. Mr E. C. Norrish, the caretaker, had given every satisfaction in his care of the greens, which would be in good order for the coming season. A carnival was held in aid of the club's funds, but owing to the wet weather the result was much less than was anticipated. The committee thanked all who had contributed toward the success of the club during the year. The tennis section reported that several tournaments were held during the year, and these were instrumental in maintaining a keen interest throughout the season. A number of friendly matches were played, three being won and six lost. The section thanked the executive for its assistance in the matter of improvements. It was again affiliated with the Mid - Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association. A handicap singles tournament was held at the end of the season, and was won by Miss E. Jarv and Mr D. AVood. An appeal was made to each member to assist in increasing the membership. Friendly matches, stated the report of the bowling section, were played with outside clubs, and were much enjoyed.
