LOOKING BACK.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From "Guardian," August 18, 1905). Labour Market.—The latest journal of the Labour Department reports as follows on Ashburton:— Building: Alter a long run of good work, extending over some years, .these trades seem to have come to a standstill, and, unless, there is a change, there will be a good few men wanting employment in the near future. The engineering trade is quiet, onlv just enough to keep the hands employed. The freezing works are only working three days a week, prior to closing down altogether. Employees in the clothing trade are fully employed. New School at Lyndhurst The North Canterbury Education Board intends to apply to the Education Department for a grant to erect a school at Murray's Corner, Lyndhurst. At present there are 35 children of school age in the neighbourhood who are over two miles away from a school. Mr Murray has signified his willingness to give a section containing two acres for a site. Rugby.—The return match between teams representing the Shop Boys and the Ashburton High School was played yesterday at the school grounds. The school boys won a well contested game by eight points to nil. Culverhouse scored twice, and Fitzgerald kicked a goal. > Hakatere Club.—A new departure has been made in connection with the Hakatere Club, the social section being augmented by the formation of a library and debating club. This club entered upon its career last Wednesday evening, when a social gathering was held, Mr H. McElrea presiding.
