TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From "Guardian,".August 4, 1905). Ashburton County Scottish Society. The Ingleside in connection with tne Ashburton Scottish Society was well attended;. Mr Peterson presided, items were contributed by Mesdames Mat- • thews and McLean, Miss Norman, Messrs Baird, Campbell and W- J. Robertson. A dance was subsequently held, music being played by Misses Walker, Terris (2), and Mr E. JHughes, - ■ , Tinwald C E. Society.—The second annual meeting in connection with the Tinwald Y.P.S.C.E. was held last night in the Oddfellows' Hall. The chair was occupied by the president (the Rev. T. J. Wallis). The following helped in the evening's programme:—Songs, Misses E. Chapman, and E. Williams, Messrs Silcock, McKay, G. Osborne and Hutchison; recitations, Misses Salter, and Messrs T. J. Williams and Mars; A duet by Misses E. and L. Schneider. Misses Bonnington and B. Williams played the accompaniments. Dromore Literary Society.—A meeting of the Dromo/e Literary and Social Society was held on Wednesday evening. ' The president (Mr L. Hanrahan), presided over a good attendance. The subject for the evening was "That it is desirable a tax should be levied on bachelors." The speakers for the motion were Messrs W. J. Elliott, T. Hanrahan, J. Allen,' W. C. Smith, J. Blackburn and M. Kissane, and against it. Miss G. C. Smith, Messrs T. Hanrahan, R. C. Campbell and S. Wilson. Hospital Committee.—A meetmg or the Hospital Committee was held this morning. Present —Mr H. Friedlander ia the chair), the Mayor (Mr H. Davis), and Messrs O. Reid and W. Nosworthy. The following tenders were accepted:— meat, Mr Silcock; groceries, Messrs J. Orr and co; bread Mr Madden; fuel, Mr T. Elliott.
