OBITUARY.

. MRS N. BROPHY. - , The ranks of the fast-diminishing band of old settlers in the Ashburton' County has been further depleted by ’ - the death of Mrs Nora Brophy, of Ashburton, last Thursday. Born* at Tallow, County Waterford, Ireland, in 1846,;? 1 Mi's Brophy, together with her husband and t\>o children, came out to New Zealand in 1874 by the s.s. Orato. - After three years’ residence in Christ- > church', Mr and Mrs Brophy settled in Ashburton. Mrs Brophy saw Ashburton- grow from a scattered- village, and bad a very clear recollection of many inci-' dents during its progress. She remembered when it was possible to. walk almost in a straight line from her residence on the Beach Road to .the railway station, when the greater part of Ashburton was in its native tussock. Mrs Brophy, who was well known and highly respected by a large circle of, friends, enjoyed exceptionally good, health, and retained her faculties until the end. She was predeceased by her husband and two of her family, and leaves eni> daughter and four sons to mourn her loss.

The funeral took place after Requiem Mass in the Church of the Holy Name on Friday, and was largely attended. The Rev. Dean O’Donnell officiated at the graveside.

LAST RESPECTS PAID. / j FUNERAL OF MR H. A. LLOYD, The high regard in which the late Mr E]j. A; Lloyd was held hv all who came in cointact with him was in evidence yesterday, when a large gathering of residents of Ashburton, farmers from all parts of the County, representatives of mercantile and other business firms, local bodies, friends and relatives attended the funeral to pay their last tribute to one who had been a prominent figure in different spheres in Ashburton for over 40 years. The Rev. A. G. Irvine conducted a short service at the late Mr Lloyd’s residence, and later officiated at the graveside. Messrs W. C. Smith, W. A. Fleming, K. B. Garland, J. T. Thomas, H. G. Ferrier and J. Smith were the pall-bearers. A large and beautiful collection of wreaths were received, including those from the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, manager and staff of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ashburton, Committee, of the Ashburton A. and P. Association,. Messrs Clouston and Co. (Blenheim), manager and staff of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. (Ashburton), directors and staff of Pyne. Gould, Guinness, Ltd. (Christchurch), Mayor, councillors and burgesses of Ashburton, directors and staff of the Ashburton Co-opera-tive Dairy Company, Ltd., Mr H. D. Johnston and staff, management and staff of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd. (Ashburton), Presbyterian Junior Sunday School teachers and Girls’ Auxiliary.
