A DARING THIEF.
AUCKLAND HOUSE ENTERED. AUCKLAND, July 19. A daring thief was discovered at work yesterday in a house owned by Duncan Clark, of 30, Bassett Road, Remuera. The thief and another man believed to be his accomplice eluded police. A maid saw a red-haired man bending over a bureau, from which a small sum of money was subsequently found to be missing. She screamed and the man bolted. Mr Clark was in the garden at the time and did not see the intruder escaping. A party of telegraph linesmen saw a man run up the street. Later, another man, apparently an accomplice, approached two linesmen and threatened them with dire consequences if they did not keep their mouths shut. The linesmen produced spanners. The second man decided to retreat. Descriptions were lieing reported to the police and both suspects were traced to an hotel in Newmarket, but they rushed out of the door into a waiting taxi when they spied the police.
