LOOKING BACK.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” July 21, 1905). Kyle.—On Tuesday evening last, the bachelors of Kyle held a most successful social and dance in. the schoolroom. The music was supplied by Messrs Anderson and Cochrane (piano and violin). Mr Stewart was M.C. During the evening, items were given by Miss Bunz, Messrs J. B. Carruthers, J. Jamieson and W. Lambie. , Tinwald Band of Hope.—The monthly meeting of ..the Tinwald United Band of Hope was held in the local hall on Wednesday evening. A company of young girls—Misses Schneider (2), Wilson (2), Osborne (2), Tippet, Oulverhouse and Hickman—rendered several choruses.' Recitations were given by Messrs . Lopdell and B. Clothier, Misses R. and M. Wilson, and Miss A- Hansen, duet by Messrs Gudsell and Mullaney, violin solo by Miss Tippett. Two dialogues were given by Misses E. and M. McMillan, R. Wilson, E. Schneider and L; Clothier.

Ashburton Debating Society.—There was a good gathering in the Church of England schoolroom last evening when a debating contest was held between the Ashburton and Flemington Societies on the respective merits of freehold and leasehold. Flemington, who advocated freehold, were represented by Messrs Taylor, Schneider, Prebble, and Hamlin, while Messrs O. Alcorn, F. Choate, P. Orr and T. Stevens upheld the, leasehold tenure on behalf of the Ashburton Society. The result was in favour of Flemington by two votes. St. Stephen’s Guild.—The OddfelJows’ Hall was well filled last night when an entertainment in aid of the St. Stephen’s Guild was held. The tables at the tea meeting were pre*sided over by Mesdames Bullock, Clark l , Williams, McKeague, Leckner, White, Hewson, Patching, Andrews, Percy, Pembertny, Ferriman, Bass and Gibson, and Miss Wihtehouse. The evening was spent in vocal and elocutionary items.
