PRISON DRAMA
ENDS IN DOUBLE MURDER. WOMAN BETRAYS ESCAPEE. SHOT WITH CHINESE LOVER. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) PARIS, July 18. There has just been enacted an astonishing prison drama, culminating in a double murder, the central figure of which was Joseph Girandot, who was arrested for murder in 1926 and escaped. Girandot obtained a position as katclienman, and formed a liaison with the cook, Louise Deryaux. They quarrelled, and she betrayed him. He was re-arrested, and escaped again. He ascertained where Louise was employed and shot her dead, and also critically wounded a Chinese manservant, who was her lover. Giraudot surrendered to the police. He says he intended to commit suicide, but unfair statements in the newspapers nlade him reconsider his decision, and he decided to defend his honour.
