(From Our Own Correspondents). , , RAKAIA. The weather during the week-end was dull and cold. On I riday tneie was a dusty north-wester, but on Saturday the wind changed to the south and the sky was cloudy all day. In the evening drizzling ram fell m light showers, nine points beina: registered at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Showeis of misty rain continued at intervals on Sunday, but at night the weather cleared. The rainfall up to Monday morning was six points. This light rainfall good by refreshing the grass and green .crops, but neayy ram is needed. _ , , : Although the weather on Saturday was dull and cold, all the usual weekendi games were played. The Ladies Hockey Club opened the season with, an enjoya.ble practice match, and the men’s hockey club also played practice games. The Croquet Club held' a coin- . petition afternoon, and although the attendance was not large, an enjoyable afternoon was spent. The competitions, which were arranged by Mrs Finlay, the club captain, were won by Mrs Black (2), Mrs Turton, Mrs Finlay and Miss Edgington. , ; The Rakaia School Committee s quota for the proposed dental clinic is still a little short of the amount required. A house-to-house canvass has been conducted, and a. concert is to be held to assist in making up the ..deficiency. i ■■ ■ MOUNT SOMERS. Those present at the monthly' meeting of the Mount Somers Road Board yesterday were: Messrs J, Jt. Lockliard (chairman), E. J. Waugh, G. A. Bland and Colonel R. B. Neill. The chairman reported that over £55 had been collected in the road district for the Cancer Campaign funds. The clerk reported that the surfacemen were attending to the annual overhaul of the Ashburton Gorge roads, and were now working on the Hakatere-Mesopotamia Road, after which attention would be paid to the Lake Heron Road. He also reported that the contractor was making good progress with the • shingling of the Tramway Reserve Road. The annual meeting of ratepayers was fixed for Monday, May 5. The annual election of members will also be held ‘in May, Messrs A. B. Lockhead, E. J. Waugh and G. A. Bland retiring by rotation. Colonel E. B. Neill and Mrs Neill, of “Barrosa,” will leave this week on a visit to England. Mr G. Patton had the misfortune to dislocate a. bone ip his left foot as a result of slipping when travelling over some stony around at the week-end. He was admitted to the Ashburton Hospital yesterday. Good progress is being made with the erection of the bridges for the new railway line to the coal mines. Work has begun on the last bridge. Mr J. G. Copeland, who has been connected with the Mount Somers railway staff for the lost three years, has been advised of his transfer to Springfield.

CHERTSEY. The Chertsey Social Club held its second euchre evening in the local hall. There was a large attendance. The winners of the games were: —Women, Mrs Cronin 1, Mrs A. Doig 2: men, Mr S. Hurst 1, Mr C. MeSweeney 2. The games were controlled by Mr Symister and Mr Andrew Doig. Supper and a dance followed. Mrs Cain. Miss V. Cain, Miss Robinson, Mr J. - O’Reilly, and Mr J. Cronin played for the dances, while Mr Cain acted as M.C. .The prolonged dry spell was broken on Saturday night by a light fall of rain, which continued on Sunday. This will freshen the flower gardens and the green feed and help to replenish the empty tanks. SEAFIELD. • There was a large gathering at the harvest thanksgiving service ow Sunday. It was conducted by Mr Rogers (Presbyterian Home Missionary). Tasteful decorations were carried out m flowers and produce, and suitable music was supplied by Miss M. son.During March rain fell on five days, the maximum fall being 60 points on March 8. The total for March, 1930, was 1.28 in., and for March, 1929, 2.27 in. During the week-end 11 points of rain fell, bringing the year’s total rainfall to T.Olin., compared with 5.08 in for the corresponding period last year. BARRHILL. On Saturday afternoon the Barrhill School Committee held an enjoyable function in aid of the fund for the dental clinic, to be established at Rakaia and Methven, and also to help the school basketball team. Tennis and croquet competitions were played and weight-guessing and other competitions were conducted. A committee of Jadies was kept busy serving refreshments. As a result of the afternoon’s entertainment a satisfactory sum was realised.
