RUGBY UNION

t MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. BROADCASTING OF MATCHES. The Management Comgiittee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, when the president (Mr S. H. Sullivan) presided. Ihe question of the broadcasting of matches played by the touring British team was discussed.

Mr H. J, Chapman said the Union might consider v the installation of a set at the Showgrounds. This would tend to maintain good attendances at the Union’s matches.

Nlr D. C. Brown thought some system might be adopted whereby progress scores would be posted at the Showgrounds.

With reference to the annual meetlng of the New Zealand Union, the Union s delegate was instructed to vote m favour of broadcasting of matches.

The convener of the Grounds Committee (Mr R. H. Biggar) reported on toe work that was required to be done at the Showgrounds before the grounds would be in order for play. The report uas adopted and it was decided, on toe motion of Mr Chapman, that steps be taken to have the concrete slab in the centre of the main ground removed. . An invitation was received from the Marlborough Union to be represented at the official opening of the new Lugby grounds at Blenheim on Monrp| 21. The letter was received. Jhe South Canterbury Union wrote •asking the Ashburton Union what it bad in view with regard to the selection of the combined North OtagoSouth Canterbury-Ashbnrton team to play against the touring v ßritish team at Timaru. The presdeint considered there should be a selector from each union and that a trial match should be held at Timaru.

On the motion of Mr Biggar it was decided that the president’s suggestion be notified to the South Canterbury Union, and that further arrangements be left in the hands of the delegate to the New Zealand Union. The Mayfield Club advised that it had- not decided in which grade it would enter its team this season. In possibility of a sonior team heing played it applied for registration papers and transfer forms. Ihe secretary said the forms and papers as requested had been forwarded:

■Mr H. D. Johnston considered it would be advisable for Mayfield to remain a junior team for another twelve months. If they entered senior ranks V would tend to weaken other teams. Mr D. Heenan said there were senior players in the district who were prepared to play for Mayfield should it be a senior team.

The president said the Committee coulcr do nothing until it saw who the players seeking transfer were. Mr Biggar said it was not wise to discourage Mayfield. The club had von the junior competition for several years and if it now wished to try its luck ill senior grade it should be encouraged. ■

The Hinds Ciub wrote advising April ° would be suitable to the club for the visit of members of the Management Committee.

Permission was granted the Hinds Club to play a match with Waihi on Saturday. The Methyen Club advised that its match with Springfield had been postponed until Saturday, and the match with a Christchurch team abandoned, it further stated that Thursday evening was not convenient for the visit of members of the Management Committee, and suggested April 24 instead.. It was decided that as April 24 was inconvenient, April 29 or May 1 be offered.

A letter was received from the Sydenham Club (Christchurch) stating it was desirous of playing a match on Easter Saturday with an Ashburton Club, at Ashburton. The Union was asked if the application could be placed in the hands of the secretary of a club willing to play the match. The matter was left in the hands of the secretary. The Technical Old Boys’ Club applied for consideration of the re-classification »of TV. Holland, who had transferred I from Club, from junior to third grade, on the grounds that he was under the weight limit for third grade, and that Club only had a third grade team. He was an old pupil and now resident in Ashburton. The matter was referred to the Classification Committee. The Tinwald Club forwarded a list of its officers, and advised'that it would have its own ground in the Tinwald Domain. Arrangements were being made for the nomination and seconding the Club for affiliation to the Union. The Club thanked the Committee for its representation at the. last, meeting of the Club. Two registration forms were enclosed. Seven * members would require transfers, while the matter of regrading three members would have to he considered. The matter was referred to, a full meeting of the Union. The president, Messrs Biggar, Johnston and the secretary were appointed a sub-committee to consider the matter of advertising.
