CAUGHT IN THE ACT.
YOUNG MAN STEALS GOODS. ONE MONTH'S HARD LABOUR. Apprehended in East Street late yesterday afternoon after he was seen to take a bundle of singlets from the outside of a draper's shop. Patrick Joseph Carr appeared before Mr R. Clark, J.P., and Mr A. H. Fenn, J.P., in the Ashburton Magistrate's Court this morning, when he was charged with having stolen eight singlets, valued at £<i. 15s 4d, the property of C. L. Collins, draner, East Street.' Accused pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant H. Martin said that accused had cycled to Chertsey for liquor. Be was setn to take the articles from outside Mr Collins's shop. He olanted the singlets behind a boardinghouse near the railway station and covered them with grass. He had been keeping bad company. Accused said he' had had some liquor, and he did not know what he was doing. If he could be let off with a fine ho would pay it in a few weeks when he got some money. Senior-Sergeant Martin said h>? objected to time being allowed, as the nolice had had trouble with accused before.
Accused w<ls sentenced to one month's hard labour, without the option of a fine.
