AMERICAN TARIFF

EFFECT OF NEW RATES. FARM EXPORT DEBENTURE. FEAR OF FOREIGN REPRISALS. (United Press Association—Copyright.) WASHINGTON, March 25. Mr A. Legge (chairman of the Federal Farm Board) expressed the conviction that the farm export debenture proposed in the Tariff Bill passed by the Senate could not be made operative. He said: "It might work for a little while, but foreign importing countries would undoubtedly put up insurmountable barriers, perhaps to the extent of, an embargo against an American product on which the debenture was operative. They have already threatened such action in anticipation of an attempt by the United States to dump wheat." EFFECT ON CANADIAN TRADE. WASHINGTON, March 24. The Tariff Bill affects Canadian trade to the extent of £15,000,000 a year.
