NEXT AUSTRALIAN GOVERNOR. LABOUR URGES LOCAL NOMINEE (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11 ■SO a.m.) SMONEY, This Day. Rumours are current that Sir Adrian Knox (Chief Justice of the High Court) will possibly be the next Governor-General of Australia. Other names mentioned are those of Generals chauvel and Monash also Mr M. Charlton (formerly leader of the Federal Labour Party), and Sir Ernest Groome (late Speaker of the House of Representatives). Labour members are pressing for the appointment of an Australian, and acceptance by Sir Adrian Knox, involving, as it would, his resignation from the Bench, would be particularly ? leasing to a section of the Labour arty. Official circles at Canberra maintain the strictest secrecy. A message from London states that the ■*-. Dominions Office regards the rumours as ridiculous. No name has yet been submitted to the King, nor is likely to be for some time. Mr J. E. Fenton (Minister of Trade), who is in London, Js of opinion that the time is not ripe_ for a> local appointment, which would sure to cause heartburnings.
