BOXING.
THE SARRON-DONOVAN BOUT. (Special tu the “Guardian.”) AUCKLAND, March 24. In view of the discussion concerning the Sarron-Donovan boxing bout at New Plymouth and of criticism emanating from Wellington in particular of tho refereeing, a Press representative had a talk with Dick Meale, the referee, concerning the decision. Meale stated at the outset that in his opinion Sarron throughout showed himself the better boxer and there was no doubt about Donovan being distressed at tho time of his opponent’s disqualification, but, as referee, he was bound to take notice of the rules relating to foul blows. According to the rules any blow which was not oil the front or side of the head or on the body above the bplt was a foul blow, and he had made this clear to Sarron. Of course, a referee had to decide whether or not the actions of the man receiving a foul blow had himself contributed to it. In this bout he ,had warned Sarron once or twice that the blows he aimed were not strictly legal and he had no option but to disqualify Sarron in the seventh round, when, with Donovan at his mercy and doubled over from a solar plexus punch he struck the other man on the back of the head. Discussing the final punch, Meale
remarked Lit at the landing of the blow on the back of the head was the reason for the disqualification and he had no doubt whatever about the blow being illegal.
