NEW ZEALAND TREATY. GOVERNMENT'S COUNTER MOVE. DEBATE IN PARLIAMENT. (United Press Association—Copyright.) • (Received This Day, 2.3 p.m.) OTTAWA, March 7. Mr P. F. Casgrain (Liberal Whip in the (Dominion House of Commons) today moved an amendment to the Conservative amendment on the motion to go into Committee of Supply, proposing that instead of an Order-in-Council extending the Australian treaty to Now Zealand being rescinded, the Government should proceed with the negotiations for a treaty, and that the Order-in-Obuneil continue in force In the meantime. Previously the Minister of Finance (Mr Dunning) said that the Conservative amendment was an effort to make political capital out of the hearing, which was not yet complete, before the Tariff Board. There was no definite treaty at the moment, but the Government had already indicated 1 to New Zealand its desire to enter a real treaty. The resolution before the House, being read in- New Zealand, would, if passed, injure the chances of future negotiations. Mr Dunning announced that he was asking his colleagues to move an amendment, which Mr Casgrain did. Mr E. W. Rowe (Conservative), previously stated that the New Zealand agreement was so serious that from Kingston (Ontario) to Montreal dairy farms could be bought at from £5 to £8 an acre.

An Ottawa cablegram published on Thursday stated: In the Canadian House of Commons to-day on a Government motion to go into supply, the Conservatives moved an amendment. This urged that certain trade arrangements with Nqk: Zealand should be rescinded forthwith and that immediate steps should be taken to negotiate a treaty with that Dominion "on'fair and equitable terms."
