AUSTRALIA V. NEW ZEALAND. VISITORS WIN FIVE GAMES. ' CHRISTCHURCH,, This Day. The Test match between the Australian and New Zealand lawn tennis teams was .commenced yesterday afternoon. Australia won five matches, to New Zealand's one. Although t,he singles produced intervals of sparkling play, the doubles were lacking in thrills, and play generally was not up to international standard, neither side producing its best form: The Australians, however, showed definite superiority, with the exception of Teague, who was downed by Wilson' in three sets. The New Zealanders frequently went to the.net, but were. unable to gain any advantage, and more often than not found these tactics costly, for the Australians proved past masters at. placements. The play of the visiting team was characterised, by baseline nlay, with occasional and decisive visits to the net. The New Zealand champion, Angas, was beaten bv Sproule in three sets. Angas could do nothing with the Australian's shots in the first two sets. which' he lost 6-1, 6-2, hut he drove the Australian to 14 frames in the third f.nme, finally losing 6-8. Donohoe and Bnrtleet were seen in a marathon of five sets, the former winning after two and a-quarter hours' play. The Australians were victorious in both doubles matches. Teague lost to N. R. C. Wilson '6-8, 1-6, 4-6; C. E. Sproule beat C. Ang'as 6-1, 6-2, 8-6; C. J. Donohoe beat E. L. Bartleet 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 7-9, 8-6. Doubles.—Kalms and Teague beat Angas and Fiance 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, 7-5: Snroule and Donohoe beat Wilson and Bartleet 3-6, 0-4, 10-8, 6-5. A CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. At a special meeting of the MidCanterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Associ-ation on Thursday evening, over which the president (Mr G. Clark) presided, it was 6 decided to hold a Christmas tournament this year. The dates and conditions will be the same as last year 'for the senior grade. The question of including a junior grade was considered, but decision was deferred till a later date.
