Representation of New Zealand at the British Empire Games m Canada next August was discussed at a meeting of the British Empire Games Com- ' mittee last evening. The New Zealanders are scheduler to leave Auckland by the Aorangi. on Julv 1, returning from San Francisco by'the "Tahiti on September 3 and reaching Wellington on September 22. The estimated travelling expenses arc £llO for each representative. Referring to the possibility of bowline interests being represented Air Kershaw, of the New Zealand Bownng Association, said that there was net much hope of a team which would be 'fully representative being available Mr Mayer said that New Zealand Bowline Association would not send a team unless it was up to test standard Should the association sanction a a team it would have to be representative of the country's best. Mr Kershaw said that he would refer the question of the bowling team to the Dominion Council. . "It is generally recognised as being taboo for bowlers to go away and have their expenses ioaifl," said Mr Mayer. The question had been raised in bowline circles on several occasions, and it had never met with a favourable reccp"Bowlers are chiefly elderly men. and those who are able to go away are men who are perhaps retired from business," said Mr Kershaw "Bowlers generally do not feel that they should be called upon to pay for any representatives to go away." It waa probrble'that the New Zealand eight would be announced after the regatta at Auckland on March 22. _ • An application for nomination as a member of the team made by Colin Gardner, heavyweight boxing champion of-'New Zealand, was referred to the New Zealand Boxing Association.
