THE WEATHER.
OVERCAST, BUT WARM, I : Extremely warm weather Dreyailed yesterday, there being little breeze to temper the heat from the sun’s_ rays. The highest reading of the thermometer was; 80.6 degrees, being the fourth occasion on which the thermometer has registered over 80 degrees. Conditions to-day, although overcast, were pleasantly warm. The barometric 'pressure at 9.30 o’clock this morning vyas 30.01 inches, almost the same as yesterday. The extreme temperatures yesterday were 80.6 and 52.8 degrees, as against 74.8 and 47.3 on Saturday.
CONDITIONS IN JANUARY. Unseasonable conditions marked the weather last month, rain falling on 17 days. The total amount of rain that fell during the month was 5.38 inches, the heaviest falls being 137 points on the 14th, 118 on the 28th, and 113 on the Bth. This ivas the largest amount that has been recorded in January for over 15 years. The barometric pressure ranged from 30.22 inches on the 10th to 29.04 on the 3rd. Although little summer weather has been experienced so far this season, the thermometer has shown a rise during the last few weeks. The maximum temperatures in January varied from 85.1 on the 23rd to 51.8 on the loth, and the lowest temperatures from 60 on the 6th to 38 on the 9tlU Cold southerly winds blew on several occasions, and the days generally were bleak and dull.
MONTH AT ASHBURTON FORKS. The heaviest rainfall in January for 51 years was experienced at the Ashburton Forks last month, when 803 points were recorded. The previous heaviest fall was 590 points, in January, 1921. Rain fell on 14 days last month, the highest fall being 279 points on »he 14th.
TO-DAY’S FORECAST. The following weather forecast was issued to-day:— Indications' are* for variable and moderate breezes, northerly moderate prevailing. There is a prospect of fair to cloudy weather. Barometer falling slowly.
