THE UNEMPLOYED.
POSITION AT GISBORNE. (Per Press Association.) GISBORNE. January 30. As a sequel to.several deputations -waiting oir him, the Mayor of Gisborne/Mr D. W. Coleman, telegraphed to the Minister of Public Works statins: that approximately 150 men were out of work in the town, and asking the Minister to authorise placing additional men on railway works. [ ’'-To-day the Mayor received a reply that the Minister would look into the position l immediately, and advise at the earliest possible date. In consequence of reports to him to-day, the Mayor has written to the Minister stating that it is reported that seventeen men arrived here yesterday from Rotorua and were being transported to railway works, the Mayor commenting to the Minister that this was very unfair to local men. From inquiries made by a reporter to-day, it "ft understood 'that these men were sent to the railway works from the Auckland Labour Bureau, in an effort to alleviate unemployment in the northern centre. Another gaim of fifteen men, also from Auckland, it is understood, arrived at the Waikokopu end of the railway on the previous day. All members of both these gangs are single men.
