ALLAHABAD FAIR EXCITEMENT. 4,500,000 PERSONS BATHING. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 8.10 a.m.) DELHI, January 30. Yesterday was the greatest day in the Kumbii Alola. fair at Allahabad. It is officially estimated that 4,500,000 persons bathed in the Ganges. Tragedy was narrowly averted when a young mare elephant became fractious, gored a female elephant, and ran amok, trampling on the huts, which soon caught lire. The mahout clung desperately to the elephant’s tail. With 2,000,000 people packed in a space of two miles long and one mile wide there was ’ imminent risk of casualties, hut thanks to the. resource of a magistrate and a superintendent of police the beast was ultimately safely recaptured.
