TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” January 31, 1005.) Chortsey Co-operative Shearing Sheet.—in round figures about 21,U0U sheep have been shorn this year in the shearing shed at Cher.tsey. This number greatly exceeds the most sanguine expectations ot the directors. tipper Ashburton Road Board.—The usual monthly meeting of the Upper Ashbuiton Road Board was held in the Board’s otfice, West Street, yesterday afternoon. Present:. Messrs, C. J. Harper (chairman), G. Mcßae', J. Tucker, R. Caniphell, junior, and M. Stitt. The Ashburton County Council wrote dealing with the matter of flood water in the Lagmhor, Tinwald, and Willowby districts, and asking if the Hoard wished the Council to carry out \ the work of the cutting from Willow bridge. The Council would do the work provided the cost was apportioned, it was decided that the Board contribute £2O toward the cost, of the work. It was also decided “That Thursday be fixed for the working day in the week the closing of shops at 1 o’clock in this district.”

Ashburton Stock Market.—The entry at the Ashburton Stock Market today comprised 5000 sheep and 40 head of cattle. Values were:—Store cattle: Dry cows £2~ 10s, dairy cows 30s to £4 7s Gd; fat cows £5, £5 os; heifers £4 J2s 6d to £5 15s. Sheep: Fats, crossbred wethers 18s 4d to 245, ewes 15s 7d to 17s lOd; stoves, crossbred wethers 17s 9d to 18s lOd, ewes 17s *to 20s.

Hibernian Society.—A banquet and social was liekl in the Catholic 'Boys’ Schoolroni last evening, to mark the first anniversary ’of the Ashburton branch of the H.A.C.B. There was a large attendance, and the president occupied the chair. The District President (Bro. J. F. Doolan), of Christchurch, was also present. Bro. ' T. O’Carroll was presented with a president’s collar and a greenstone pendant mounted in gold., in recognition of the valuable services lie had rendered during the year.. Bro. O’Carroll has propose! 120 members since the inception of the Lodge, which certainly establishes a record that would he hard to % beat.
