BOOKMAKING CHARGE
TWO ARRESTS IN TIMARU. TIMARU, August 13. Sandringham, but with the King’s men were arrested in Timaru this afternoon and subsequently appeared before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., on charges of bookmaking. William Alexander O’Connor, barman, was charged that on August 13 he did carry on the business of a bookmaker at Timaru. He way further charged that on August 9 he did use the public bar of the Empire Hotel as a common gaming house. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. Ivan Vuleta was charged that on August 13, being the occupier of premises at 33 High Street, he did use the same as a common gaming house. He was also charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. Inspector A. S. Bird, who prosecuted, asked for a remand until Saturday, which was granted. Bail was allowed in each case, salt in £IOO. and one surety of £IOO, otwo of £SO each.
