TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” June 11, 1904). The W. W. Smith Testimonial.—-The following amounts have been received by the committee of the Ashburton Beautifying Association towards the W. AV. Smith testimonial, viz.:—Dr. Trevor, Air Bullock, Air AV’. Baxter, Ashburton A. and P. Association, New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Mr D. Thomas, Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club, each £1 Is; the Mayor (Air H. Davis), Messrs C. J. Harper, W. H. Collins, J. Orr, F. Ferriman, Nicoll Bros., J. Tucker, G. Hefford, W. H. Rule, Dr. Hunter, A. Orr, J. McLachlan, each 10s 6d; W. J. Silcock, Mitchell and Turner, F. Sorint, J. W. Baker, It. Alcorn, W. J. Sparrow, J. AT. Cambridge, and P. H. Cox, each ss; H. C. Craighead, G. Robertson, and G. Aleddins, each 2s 6d.
Leap Year Basket Social.—A pleasant and successful evening under the management of several of the young ladies of this town, took place last night in the Orange Hall. About forty couples were present, and music was supplied by Miss Terris. Songs were contributed by Alessrs Alcorn, Rattray and Grant, extras being played by Miss A. Story and Messrs Shearman and Stock. Air G. Scott was M.C.
Longbeach Road Board.—The usual monthly meeting of the Longbeach Road Board was held this morning. Present: Messrs J. C. N. Grigg (chairman), W. J. Stoddart, W. T. Lill, J. Small and JP. Bishop. At the request of the Afount Hutt Road Board it was decided to supply further information re the Longbeach Board’s circular advocating an Association of Road Boards.
