(Wheatstone), and George Morrison (Tinwald), notify that thenplaces of business will be closed at one p.m. on Saturday for the weekly haliholiday. Debating.—The Ashburton Debating , Society held its usual meeting last < .evening, Mr Sandrey being in the chair. Essays were given by the following members: —Messrs Brock. W. Woods, E. P. Williams, H. Revell, -and Choate. Messrs Choate and Johnston consented to act as leaders in the •debate next Wednesday, the subject -being- "That the Government Should ' Take Steps to Prevent Quackery." Charitable Aid Board.—At a meetring of the Charitable Aid Board yesterday, it was reported that the allocation of the contributions from local 'bodies for charitable purposes for the -Ashburton County in the financial year -of 1904-5 was set down as follows: Ashburton County £949 12s; Ashburton Borough £B3 10s 4d. Ashburton County Racing*Club.—lne autumn meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club was commenced this afternoon in fine weather.
