The first Court of the season was noteworthy because it was the first since the day© of Queen Victoria to be held by the Queen of England. In spite of the absence of the King the ceremonial setting was splendid, and presented a majestic spectacle ine Queen- appeared: in a wonderful gown of irridesc«nt tissue over a dress ot pastel shades. She wore the Order ot the Garter, and presented a regal & The single throne reminded everyone of the illness of the King, but the knowledge of his wonderful progress toward recovery provided an, atmosphere of gaiety and joy. Masses of rambler roses and blue and white hydrangeas decorated tne A stream of debutantes, 500 in number, passed before the Queen, made a single curtsey, then moved along the picture gallery. _ Miss Helen Wills, the tennis player, was the centre of attraction for huge crowds in the Mall, where her motorcar was besieged.
