Mr Hughes' plea to & portrait painter, "I want mercy, not justice, is recalled by the fact that the trade journal "Tailor and Cutter" commenting on some Academy artists use of a wanton brush on clothes while they lavish thought and skill on the heads of their subjects says, concerning the portrait of Mr Hughes.: "The coat has several marked faults, the sleeve ballooning at the elbow. There are impossible folds above the pocket, which looks like a cartridge case. There is a wobbly lapel on one side, and a blank on the other The linen collar is wing-shaped, but the wings have been clipped while there is a pink bow tie, shaped like a harpoon?
