CATTLE TICK.

NEED FOR PRECAUTIONS. (Special to the "Guardian.") . CHRISTCHTTROH, This ©ay. The opinion that the Department of Agriculture was not taking adequate precautions with a view to keeping cattle tick out of Canterbury was exgressed at yesterday's meeting of the anterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. In reply to a protest from the Association, the Director-General of Agriculture (Dr. C. J. Reakes) wrote stating that when the Department was advised of the reported presence of cattle tick in the Nelson district it went fully into the matter, and although frequent and very careful examinations of the stock on the farm had been made, no further ticks had been found and no trace of ticks had been found on stock in the district where similar careful examinations andi inquiries had been made. The Director detailed the precautionary measures that had been adopted. Mr R. W. Lochhead said he thought the Department had not taken sufficient precautions in the South Island. Ho moved that the Association should again write to the Department urging that steps sfibldd be taken thoroughly to disinfect all trucks used for carry-; ing stock arriving from the North Island. Mr L, R. C. Macfarlane, who seconded the motion, urged that the Association should keep "hammering away at the 'Department." The motion was carried.
