CAPTAIN DISOBEYED.
SHIP'S FIREMAN FINED.
(Special to the "Guardian.") WANGANUI, April 10
Bad water and bad conditions on the steamer Aelbryn at Castlecliff discharging phosphates from Nauru Island were said to be the cause why William Hannah, a fireman, refused the lawful command of Captain Stevenson.
Hannah, in Court, said that the water was bad, also the stores, and all hands, including the captain, contracted boils.
The captain, in his turn, said that Hannah's boils were due to bad teeth. They were obliged to carry a big stock of water on that run and some of it was a little rusty, but otherwise it was all right. 'James McConnell, a fireman, said that. had been on the ship seven months. Conditions were going from bad to worse, and they could get no redress. He had three doctors brought on the ship at different times and all sided with the officer and the men were told to take a packet of salts. The water was taken in at Panama Canal and was filthy. Accused, when fined '£2, remarked: "Don't 'you worry, I am not going back to that ship."
