THE UNEMPLOYED.

REQUEST TO THE PREMIER.

(Special to the "Guardian.") CHRHSTCHURCH, April 10

A deputation of unemployed waited on Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., yesterday, and asked if men would be taken from the South Island for work on the extensioin and completion of the to-Westport railway. They claimed that they had been told at the Labour Bureau that only North Island men would be put on that work. Mr Howard telegraphed to the Prime Minister, asking what was the position.

Sir Joseph Ward had replied that he was having inquiries made and would reply later.
