The Department of Agriculture /has received the following cablegram, dated February 16, from _the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London :—■ , Tallow.—The spot market is steady and there, was a fair demand at auction Present quotations are:—Mutton : Fine 45s per cwt, fair to good 41s to 44s per cwt, dark to dull dm Del to 38s Gd. Beef: Sweet and or mixed, 42s to 445; fair to good, 39s to 425; dark to dull, 37s 6cl to 38s. Mixed: Fair to good, 38s 6d to 41s 6d; dark to dull, 37s 6d to 38s; gut, etc., 35s bd to 37s 9d per cwt. Fruit.—The market is very quiet owhv to the severity of the weather. American Newton Pippins lis to 13s per case; Spitzenberg 13s to 14s per case • Stavman's Winesap 12s to Ids cer case; "South African William pears 4s to 5s per tray; Clapp's Favourite 3s" 6d to 4s 6d per tray. Hemp.—The Manila market opened weaker but gradually recovered strength. "J" grade sold for Febru-ary-April shipment at £35 10s. The sisal market is steady after an, easier opening, but small business is passing. Value of best marks, No. 1 for Febru-ary-April shipment, £4l 10s; No. I, £39 10s. The New Zealand market is full with" an easy tendency, and buyers ars holding back. Closing values for February-April shipment are: Highpoints £35, fair £32 10s, common £3O 10s. , , x . . . Wool.—The, Bradford market is quiet and weaker. Business in, tops and yarns is restricted owing to the absence of confidence caused by uncertainty of the outlook for raw materials. Present quotations are:—64 s ( merino), warp 3s 9d, average. 3s Bd; 56's (super half-bred), 2s 9d; 50's prepared, 2s 4id; 40's prepared, Is 10id per lb.
