KILLED BY A TRAIN. (Special to the "Guardian.") WAIPUKURAU, Feb. 18. On Saturday evening a single man, named Alfred Death, aged 61, was struck by a slow train near fakapan station. He was picked up m # a serious condition and conveyed to Waipukurau Hospital, where he died yesterday afternoon. An inquest was opened this morning before Dr Kendall, District Coroner. Evidence of identification was taken and the inquest adjourned till Monday next. A LAUNCH FATALITY. (Special to the "Guardian.") AUCKLAND, Feb. 18. An onen verdict was returned by the Coroner, Mr Sutherland, at the inquest on Richard Madden, who was drowned at Manukau Heads on the night of February 2. Madden was one of a party ot fifteen in a launch. A witness who piloted the launch stated that before the launch left Onehunga fifteen gallons of beer were taken aboard. Five gallons were drunk on the Avay down. Madden was missed at 9 p.m. Later his body was found between the launch and the wharf. . William Franklin, a carrier, stated that he thought there were twenty-five gallons of beer on the launch when she left Onehunga. Five gallons were consumed on the way to Whatipu. The remainder was brought back next clay. There was no bickering or arguing among the party. Other evidence stated that all the members of the party were quite sober, except one man, who was put in a dinghy on arrival at Whatipu and went to sleep there.
