NEW YEAR’S DAY.

SPORTS AT HAKATERE. AN ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME. The only official fixture for New Year’s Day in Ashburton will be the Hakatere Sports Club’s annual meeting at the mouth of the river. The various committees have been working hard to ensure the success of the fixture. An attractive sports programme has been arranged and cash prizes will he given. Numerous sideshows and stalls, including ice-cream, soft drinks, afternoon tea, chocolate and cocoanut shies, and skittle alleys will be held. Chain-stepping and sheaftossing competitions will be included in the entertainments. Hot water for lunch and tea will be supplied. A tennis tournament will be held, for which entries may be made on the ground. The courts have recently been topdressed and are in excellent condition. The Ashburton Silver Band will be present and play items during the day. A concert and dance will be held in the evening in the .hall, which has been decorated and fitted with multicoluoured electric bulbs. A supperroom has been added to the hall and will add to the comforts of patrons. In the event of New Year’s Day being wet, the programme will be carried out on the following day, Wednesday. The devotees of other pastimes will occupy their time in friendly games. The usual picnics to the various pleasure resorts will be held.
