LOOKING BACK
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," Dec. 28, 1903.) Tinwald Cricket Club.—A revived interest is being taken in cricket in Tinwald, and the reorganisation of the Tinwald'Club was brought about at a recent meeting, when the following officers were elected:— Mr J. McLachlan; president, Mr C. Doherty; vice-presidents, Messrs J. C. N. Grigg, J Studholnie, D. Thomas, H. Thompson, J. Gudsell, J. Cow, A. Dickson, W. Strange, J. Clothier and the Rev. Blakiston; captain, Mr G. Culverhouse; vice-captain, Mr H. Milhchamp; secretary and treasurer, Mr S. Gudsell : committee, the captain, yicc-cap-tain, and Messrs S. Gudsell, J. McKenzie, W. Bushell and G. Morrison. Lawn Tennis.—The Asliburton Lawn Tennis Club played a match with the Avonside Club at the Domain on Boxing Day. Several of thejjames were unfinished owing to rain. Of the games finished Ashburton won 166 and Avonside 131. Detailed Ashburton scores were as follow:—Men's singles—P. H. Cox won 18-5, W. Croft lost 14-17, G. Friedlander 13-17, F. W. Seldon 9-18, C. Alcorn 9-18, Rev. Whitehouse 18-7, W Brock 18-3. Ladies' singles—Miss Whitehouse 9-4, Miss Orr 9-3, Miss Alcorn 5-9, Miss Shury 9-8, Miss Bell 7-9. Men's doubles—Cox and Croft 12-2, Friedlander and Seldon 7-8. Combined doubles—Croft and Miss Orr 9-3. Christian Endeavour Picnic—The annual picnic of the Ashburton Christian Endeavour Union was held in the Tinwald Domain on Boxing Day. A service was held in the afternoon, when addresses were giyen by Messrs G. Wright, Buxton, Pratley, J. Williams, the Rev Wallis, and Miss Buxton.
