METHVEN. The committee of the Methven Amateur Swimming Club met on Friday evening. In the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr K. i • Renai), Mr D. Hampton presided There was a good attendance. It,wjß reported that it had been decided to hold the opening day next Saturtay in the Domain bathing pool, but as the pool was not in order, Mr *. W. TRiiddonklau had ottered the use ot the bath at his "Springfield" homestead. This otter was accepted. It was arranged to hold four races for senior and lady members, as follows:— Twenty yards handicap, 40yds handicap, 20yds tack-stroke handicap 20yds breaststroke handicap, together with a 20yds boys' race and am open diving competition It was decided to award Mr J. A Stephen's trophy to the competitor Coring most prints. Mr D. Hampton donated a trophy for the runner-up. It was decided to affiliate with the Ashburton Centre. , ... , The weather on Saturday, although overcast, remained fine and sports vwcei enjoved under good conditions. The croquet and bowling greens were in'use bv the usual quota of players, while the tennis courts were fully occu-pied-throughout the afternoon. A number of racing enthusiasts journeyed Ashburton for the races and the win for the local sportsman, Mr r. a. McGirr was very popular, having been well anticipated locally. A few indents attended the sports at Rakaia. The local runner, A. Burrows, was SSeESI in the* Sheffield ££«*, a.nd Hop, Step and. Jump, while he was also a runner-up in the 220 lards Handicap. ~ . , „„■ Durin" Saturday night, steady lain set in and continued throughout yesterday. In spite of the adverse weather the excursion to Timaru was well patronised.

MOUNT SOMERS. The annual meeting of the Mount Somers Tennis Club was held in the Library, Mrs A. R. Beckley presiding over a fair attendance. The balancesheet disclosed a credit on the year s working. Arrangements were made to put the courts and grounds in order for the opening of the season next Saturday. Ow.ing to the limited membership, it was' decided that no teams be entered in the County competitions this season. With a view to creating greater interest, it was decided to arrange niter-club matches with nearby clubs. No alteration was made in the membership fees. Appreciation of the action of the Domain Boar/1 in topdressing the asphalt courts was expressed, and it was decided to make a grant of £5 toward the cost. A motion was carried endorsing the Miniature liifie Club's proposal that representations be made to the Domain Board for the erection of a building to meet the needs of the various sports bodies. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs J. Hood tor the supplv of hot water for afternoon teas, and'the Hon. W. Nosworthy for his keen interest in, and generous support of. the club in recent years. Ihe following officers were elected:— Patroness, Mrs J. Hood; president, Mr F Peter: vice-presidents, Mrs I. I*. Peache, Colon&l R. B. Neill, Messrs R. Nosworthy, and A. N. Grigg; club captain, Mr W. D. Herron; vice-captain, Mrs A. R. Beckley, delegate to MidCanterbury Lawn 'Tennis Association, Mr C Bonnington; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. T. Bull; committee, Mesdames D. Stevens, F. W. Gifkms, and W. T. Goodrich. Misses J. Davidson and A. Webster, Messrs L. McClimont, S 3 Gifkins, W. McClimont and \\. A. H. Sharpe. , „ ~ The mild pleasant spell of weather experienced 1 since the beginning of last week gave place to hot oppressive conditions toward the week-end, Friday being the hottest day during, the present summer. Light showers fell on Saturday, and rain fell steadily throughout yesterday from the southwest 98 points being recorded up to this 'morning, when conditions were still cold and showery- Although there has been a considerable drop in the temperature, snow fell only lightlv on the high peaks.
