The mild dry spell of weather experienced during the past week gave place to a cold westerly wind toward noon yesterday, and culminated in a southely snap toward evening, heavy showers of rain and sleet falling until about 10 o'clock, when a sharp frost set in. A light coating of snow covered the surrounding hills, and a light sprinkle of sleet lay in the township this morning, increasing to upwards of an> inch in the vicinity of the coalmines. Only a light fall was experienced in the back country. Twenty-one points of rain with 11 degrees of frost were registered this morning. At a practice shoot of the Mt. The year's fall to date totals 17.95 inches, compared with 16.17 inches for the same period last year. As a result of the dry weather, most of the cereal crops for next season's harvest' are sown, the area, under cultivation being greater than last season. Wheat again comprises the greater portion. That farmers are realising the value of top-dressing their soils is apparent from the extensive top-dressing operation in progress or contemplated, where hitherto little of this class of cultivation has been undertaken. - Although the general lambing season is some weeks away, several lambs are to be seen in the district.
