SCHOOL CONTROL

ELECTION OF COMMITTEES. MEETINGS IN THE COUNTY. METHVEN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL The annual meeting of householders for the Metliveu District High School was held last evening, Mr F. VV. Ruddenklau presiding over the largest attendance for some years. The report stated that there had been a number of changes in the teaching staff. Misses Hayes and McC'oll and Mr Allen had left to take up other appointments, and Misses Breach and Rearson and Mr Pickles had been 'appointed. Miss McKendry had been appointed student assistant. The staff generally hatl done very good worn, and the-school had made good progress, it was pleasing to note tliat although the secondary department had been established only tiiree years, out.of six who sat for matriculation, four were successful, while one won a junior scholarship and another the Public Service entrance examination. The scholars and staff were to be congratulated on this fine record The school buildings bad been renovated inside and the hige-pressure water supply laid on to the school and outbuildings. The efforts of the committee to enlarge the school playground were successful, solely owing to the splendid response of parents to the appeal for financial assistance. As in other years, the committee had had the benefit of AD’ A. Orr’s gift, while the First Alarm concert party had also rendered great help. Over £240 was subscribed for the purchase of land and other improvements. During the year the committee lost the services of the Rev. G. Hercus, who was secretary for some time. Thanks were due to the staff for their good work during the year. The balance-sheet showed: Receipts, grants for incidental expenses £ll3 lbs, grants for school ’bus £591 Os 2d, amount raised locally for general purposes £9 15s 3d, raised locally for special purposes £IOO j expenditure, cleaning, fuel, lighting and water service £lO4 10s, school library £24 16s Bd, purchase of land £IOO, school buses £590 17s 2d, sports material and prizes £33 6s 6d. The election of' the committee resulted: Messrs W. C. Battson. J. Campbell, J. R. Dalton, R. N. _ Elliott.. D Hampton, H. Ei. A. Lock, u. Lock. J. Osborne and S. Smith. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the outgoing committee and to the staff for their work during the past year. i'.ulogistic reference was made by several members to the efforts of the I 1 irst Alarm concert party in raising funds for the school, and a very .hearty vote of thanks was accorded the party. A number of questions were asked and answered. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting. At a subsequent meeting of the committee, Air S. Smith was elected chairman and Air W. C. Battson secretary. it was decided that meetings be held on the third Alonday in each month.

HINDS. There was a good attendance at Hinds. Air AY P. Alusson presided. The report showed that the school had passed through a successful year. Aliss Gunn had resigned and. Aliss Goad had been appointed in her stead. The teaching staff was congratulated on the report, and especially for the results of the proficiency examination. The following committee was elected: Alessrs AY. P. Alusson (chairman), C. A. S. AYatson (secretary), H. Donaldson. J. Morris and F. Al. H. Hill.

Eight householders attended. Anama. —Messrs J. Mclver, F. G. Greenslade (secretary), F. J. McKeown. W. J. Robertson and Mrs J. Brown There was a fair attendance, Mr Greenslade presiding. Barr Kill.—Messrs E. G. Hayward, W. Hurst, G. W. Gemmell, It. Gemmed and A. Holmes (secretary). Bushside —Messrs G It. Sittock, J. Green, L. Hicks, A. Wright and C. Joli. There were seven householders present. Coldstream—Messrs. D. A. Little, A. Bond, G. H. McTague and W. B. Scott. Chertsey.—Messrs It. W. Croy, A. Doig, J. Mason and J. R. Doig. Five householders were present. _ Dorie.—Messrs D. McKie, H. T. Whiting, G. Muckle, F. Alexander. S. Gardiner. . Dromore. —Messrs C. L. Pauling, A. Copland, W. Harris, G. C. Field, and W. Mclntyre. There was no contest, only fire being nominated. Twentythree householders were present. Ealing.—Messrs A. Wallace, B. Wit-hell, H. Nickalls, It. Tilson and J. Grayburn. The- old committee was re-elected. Six householders were present.

Elgin.—Only two householders attended, and the meeting . therefore lapsed. IHemingtoji.—Messrs H. Bratley, T. Read, W. Dunn, J. Kermode and W. B, Bryant (secretary). Greenstreet. —Messrs S W. Lilley, P. Russell, P. B. Long, C. M. Hunt and G. J. Suttie. There was an attendance of 10, over which Mr Lilley presided. Highbank.—Messrs Mollraith, R. Adams (secretary)* V. Rouse, A. Hutchison and J. Wallace. Sixteen householders attended, Mr Mcllraith presiding. Lynnford.—Messrs J. W. Dell, W • E. Bishop, H. H. Johnston, A. Moore. N- E. Mclntosh. Longbeach.—Messrs) C. Tansey, F. Gorman, F. Soal, T. Penrose and It Cathenvood. Lowcliffe— Messrs G. Tait, W. McKeacre It Hawke, O. Gdliand, J. McGnmess. 'Mr Tait presided over a good' attendance. The balance-sheet

showed a satisfactory credit balance. The report stated that the- attendance of the children had been well maintained.
