SCOTTISH SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Ashburton County Scottish Society was held on Saturday evening, the Chief (Mr H. Sinclair) presiding over a Mr attendance. It was decided to hold next season s inglesides in the Orange Hall. xt was reported that, the Chief (Mr H. Sinclair) had made a. donation of £5 5s to the society's funds, and had been elected a life member of the society in recognition of the gift. It was decided as a recommendation to the incoming committee • that a church parade be held' on St. Andrew's Day. In his report the secretary (Mr Ji,. G. Craighead) stated that the society had enjoyed a very successful and enjoyable season. Burns Nicht was celebrated in the usual manner, the principal speaker being the Hon. James Craigie, of Timaru. On April 9 the Christchurch Scottish Society and Pipe Band paid their annual visit to Ashburton, and in the evening gave a concert. Tlje following morning a church, parade was held, and in the afternoon the Christchurch and Ashburton Pipe Bands gave a concert in the hospital grounds. The visitors returned to Christchurch loud in their praises of Ashburton's' hospitality. The six inglesides held during the winter were well attended, and proved very enjoyable and well-arranged functions. -Early in October the Ashburton Pipe Band and members of the Council of the Ashburton Society went to Christchurch and gave a programme before the Christchurch Society. The party received a warm reception, and 1 was hospitably entertained. During ! the same month members of the Ashi burton Society gave a concert at Fairton in aid of the Fairton Hall funds, and another at Tuarangi Homo for the benefit of the inmates. • Banns Night (Hallowe'en) was celebrated in the time-honoured way on October 31, when there was a very large attendance. In November and December, by arrangement with* Mr Cadzow, Scottish were given in the theatre, the net result to the society's fund being satisfactory. On St! Andrew's Sunday the Ashburton Pipe Band and members of the council of the society paraded to St. Andrew's Church for tDivine worship in the morning, and in the afternoon a concert was given in the hospital grounds. The secretary extended the council's grateful thanks to those who had assisted in making the past season so successful and enjoyable. The balance-sheet' showed that the society had commenced the season with \ a credit balance of £22 3s sd, finishing 'iwith a credit of £2B 9s 3d.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were electpd: Patron, Mr Andrew Brown; chief, Mr H. Sinclair; chieftains, Messrs M. McMillan and J. Mclntyre; councillors, Messrs J. Turnbull, A. B. Simpson, J. Lochhead, A. Jary, H. Cook, J. McKay, W. G. McDonald, E. 'Lithgow; secretary, Mr E. G. Craighead; treasurer, Mr J. McElhinney. Mr Sinclair briefly thanked members for their support during the season. On the motion of Mr McElhinney a vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing members of the council, in particular, Mr C. Storrier, who had been a tower of strength' during his term of office. A subsequent meeting of the council and other officers was held to make preliminary arrangements for the concert to be' given in Ashburton by the Christchurch Scottish Society next Saturday.
