THE MUSICAL CLUB.
WORKS OF BEETHOVEN. The second meeting of the season of the Ashburton Musical Club was held on Saturday evening, when a large attendance of members was present. The president (Miss Galbraith) gave an interesting lecturette on the life of Beethoven, a knowledge of which gives a better insight into his works, influenced as they were by his environment, and later by his terrible affliction, deafness. This altered the character of his compositions, but his indomitable courage carried him on r"d, shut off as he was from the sounds rf the world about him, this master musician for nearly 30 years created masterpieces the like of which the world has never seen.
The lecturette was followed by. the following delightful programme;— Pianoforte solos: Sonata 2 opus 3, first movement, Miss Mulvey; Sonata opus 78, last movement, Miss Moore; flute solo, Minuet, Mrs Alington, accompanist, Miss I. Duff; pianoforte solo, opus 1 49 No. 2, first movement, Mrs Scales; vocal quartette, Mesdames Smith, Naylor, Misses Galbraith and I. Overture to "Bgmont" opus 84; vocal solo, Mrs H. Naylor: oianoforte solo. Sonata onus 31, No. 2 "D Minor," Miss Galbraith. The last composition is judged to be one of Beethoven's finest works, which proves his versatility and justification of his title, "The Shakespeare of Music." The gathering was brought to a| close with a dainty supper provided byj the hostess of the evening, Miss L. Watt.
