There are 178 cases of scarlet feyer in Bottle Lake Hospital (Christchurch). As yet there is no probability of any of the city schools closing on account of the prevalence of the disease.
There will be no deerstalking m the Mount Somers I district during the present season, as no licenses are being issued. The Ashburton Acclimatisation Society contemplates culling later in the year.
The first inspection of the two companies of the Ashburton Girl Guides, by the Provincial Commissioner (Mrs Stoudholme) and the Divisional Commissioner (Miss M. Cox), which was to have taken place this afternoon, has been postponed to an indefinite date.
While competing at the annual meeting of the Hinds Sports Club on Saturday, C. K. Yeatman, in endeavouring to pass another runner, received a severe scratching on the left knee, caused through the knee coming into contact with one of the other competitors running shoes. '
Two new cases of infantile paralysis have been admitted to the Timaru Hospital. One is an adult from the Gleniti district, and the other is a child from Otipua Road. Neither case is considered to be very serious.
An Auckland telegram states that a daring thief robbed the safe of the Rising Sun Hotel. Road, last night, getting £l3O. The licensee, Mr J. McGregor, resides over the business portion of the hotel.
Four volumes, three of them very bulky, containing number, occupation and next-of-kin of every soldier who left New Zealand during the Great War have been received, by the Ashburton War Memorial Committee. The names total 97,335. The books will be placed in a copper box and set in the base of the Ashburton Memorial behind a suitably inscribed slab.
Interesting and inspiring addresseswere given to large congregations in the Tinwald-Flemington Presbyterian Circuit yesterday by the travelling secretary of the Presbyterian Women s Missionary Union (Miss McKee), stressing the need' of missionary effort and enterprise in the Home and Foreign field. A retiring collection for missions, taken at the morning service at Tin Wald, amounted to £l7.
By a resolution passed by the Ashburton Power Board this morning, ratepayers may vote at any polling booth they choose, irrespective of the location of the rateable property which gives them the right to vote. That is to say, a ratepayer having property at Ruapuna, for instance, may vote at any* booth in the County, and not necessarily at Ruapuna. A ratepayer fn the Borough may also vote outside the Borough, and vice versa.
A report of stock inspectors in the Canterbury-Kaikoura territory to the Department of Agriculture indicates that there is at present not a property in Canterbury badly infested with rabbits. Many rabbiters are finding it hard to get blocks to trap and poison where the number of rabbits would make it profitable. A quaint letter from a native of Rarotonga, Cook Islands, has been received by a local resident. The writer complains of the low prices for fruit obtaining at the wharf there. ..He says ' that fruit is very badly priced, Is 4d to Is 8d a case being the ruling rate from January 1 to June 31 next. The trouble is that the fruit steamers have made four trips to New Zealand with Fijian bananas each month, thus creating the drop at Rarotonga. The letter concludes: t'Well, sir, excuse me the little present. I must close now with arohamti."
At a conference of representatives of local bodies held in Timaru, a letter was received from the Ashburton County Council stating that in its district little, if any, damage was done by traction engine haulage; that traction engines were necessary for the transport of farm produce, and that any taxation imposed would be passed on' to the farmer. Ashburton County could not therefore agree to its inclusion in the scope of the proposed bylaw. The Mayor of Timaru (Mr G. J. Wallace), who presided, expressed regret at the withdrawal of the Ashburton County Council from the proposed uniform regulations and fees governing engine traffic.
At the ordinary meeting of Hakatere Lodge, N. 68, 1.0.0. F., over which the N.G. (Bro. W. C. J. Osman) presided, two members were reported on the sick list. The Hampstead War Memorial Committee met on Saturday evening, Mr W. H. Robinson presiding. The secretaries of the various committees reported that all the accounts had not been received for the All Nations Fair. It was decided to call a meeting of all the committees as soon as the accounts have been received. A vote of thanks was passed to those who donated goods to the All Nations' Fair, and it'was decided to send letters to them. The committee, carried a motion expressing regret at the death of the Rev. J. F. Wiseman, and decided that a letter of 'sympathy be sent to the wardens of St. Stephen's to be forwarded on to Mr Wiseman's relatives. A sub-com-mittee consisting of Messrs Robinson and W. Kerr was appointed to make arrangements, if possible, for a memorial service to be held on Anzac Day, at a time that would not clash with any other service conducted for the returned soldiers.
Examinations under the auspices of the Royal Life-Saving Society were held in Ashburton on Saturday afternoon, the candidates being members of Miss Beryl Buxton's class. The examiner was Mr P. G. Stevens. Results were as follow:—First test, new elementary certificate, Ada L. Lee; bronze medallions, Mary Johnstone (Technical College), Audrey N. Holdgate (Ashburton Swimming Club); proficiency certificate, Audrey M. Holdgate. Five teams entered for the Monica Thacker Shield for the ladies' life-6aving championship of Canterbury, held in the Tepid Baths, Christchurch', last week. The standard of work was very good indeed, especially that of the winning team from the Sumner Life-Saving Club, which showed a marked superiority in breaststroke and back-stroke swimming. The Sumner team were first with 406 points, and Miss Buxton's team (Misses J. Malcolmson, M. Clifton-Hogg, J. Harker and D. Shaw) was second with 376 J points.
In his lecture this evening; the Rev. Howard Elliott will refer to the his-tory-of the Prayer Book, the origin and growth of the present demand for revision, and of the immediate and ultimate results if the revision be made.

At the Allenton Sports Club's Field Day, held on Saturday, the gross takings amounted to £27 17s lOd, and ; a small sum is still outstanding.
A successful dance conducted by St. Stephen's Cricket Club was held in the Orange Hall on Saturday evening. Music was supplied by Mrs Mitchells orchestra, and. Miss R. tfbell played extras.
A Christchurch telegram states that formal evidence of identification was given by Thomas Robert Arthur Meaclem, husband of deceased, at the inquest before the Coroner, Mr E. D. Mosley, into the death of Agnes Greta Meaclera, who died on Friday. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
