EAST ASHBURTON.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. The Ashburton East School Committee me tlast evening, when there were present: Messrs W., S. Kerr (chairman), I). Keir, E. H. Childs, H. Money, AV. Thompson and E. Vincent. The Borough Inspector wrote complaining of the discharge of storm water in .Oxford Street.—lt was decided to refer this matter to the Bdu-. cation Board.
The Department of Education forwarded a circular letter regarding the eating of sweets by school children, and pointing out the danger arising from decayed teeth from this cause.— The letter was received. The headmaster (Mr W. W. Garton) reported that the attendance was particularly good. On one occasion only four children were absent out of a roll-number of 492. The roll-number had increased to 495 (236 boys and 259 girls). The increase should now place the school permanently in the next sub-grade. The annual swimming sports had been held, and proved very successful. The final races in connection with the Hunt and Hardy swimming shields were decided recently, R. Keeley winning the Hunt Shield, and Jessie and Bessie Blight the Hard} 7 Shield. Although the school did not do very well in the individual events at the inter-school sports, it held its own in the organised games.' The secretary (Mr G. Furby) and the chairman were authorised to drw up tiie report for the annual meetn.g of householders in April.
