HEAVY TAXES.

PROTEST BY MOTORISTS. 'Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 23. A strong protest was voiced at the-half-yearly meeting of the North Island Motor Union to-day regarding" the heavy taxes now being imposed onmotorists, and the manner in which these taxes are being expended. Mr R S. Abraham (Palmerston North) declared that it was time that j the license fees were remitted to motorists. He moved: "That the North Island Motor Union set up a committee to consider the heavy taxes nowbeing imposed on motorists, and further, the manner in which these taxes are expended." . Mr F. Manton seconded the motion,. declaring that New Zealand motorists v were taxed more heavily than those of' anv other country. ,» Mr C. M. Banks thought it would be wiser to wait and see the effect of" the petrol tax. Mr L. A. Edwards said that visitors to New Zealand had expressed surprise at what had been done in the way of road-making in the Dominion. Mr L. A. Hooker (South Taranaki) said tb at motorists got vastly greater mileage out of their cars than before the Main Highways Board came, Into existence. Mr Manton: You have much tor tyres now. remember. s Mr Abraham, in replying, pointed' out that the Main Highways Board had explained that the increase in taxation last year had been commensurate with the increase in the number of cars in use. The motion was carried.
