DROWNING AT ST. CLAIR. DUNEDIN, This Day. At about 6.30 last evening, batherson St. Clair beach were alarmed to see - a man who had been swimming beyond the outside line of breakers, throw uphis arms and disappear. Several members of the St. Clair Life Saving Club immediately swam to the - spot, but although they searched until a late hour, no sign of the swimmer was found. The victim was Meredith Norman Nesbit, aged 17, employed in theoperating room of the Telegraph Office. - The body was washed up on the second beach this morning. Nesbitt, whose father is a teacher 1 at the Moray Place School, was to havebathed with a party, but as they did not appear, Ee went in alone, entering the water off the rocks at ’the baths, a most dangerous spot. Members of the Surf Club swam to the spot immediately the alarm was given, but saw nothing in a longsearch. A fatality occurred in Manakau harbour this afternoon Mr 1 ercy White being drowned whde attemptino- to rescue a child named Pearce, v/ho had fallen from Cornwallis wharf. When the child fell into the water, Mr White immediately dived m, although' he was not a strong swimmer, having been severely, injured m the war.
