THE ASHBURTON COMPETITIONS. SATURDAY'S MATCHES. The Ashburton County Cricket Association's competitions were continued on Saturday, when a further series of matches was completed. Details were as follows : SENIOR GRADE. ASHBURTON A DEFEATS B. Continuing the match commenced last Saturday between the A and B teams of the Ashburton Club, the B team replied to the A team's total of 186 with 175 (Stephens 27, Charles 30, B. Lane 24, Judge 21, A. Lane 15, Bentley 14). The A team, which compiled 103 runs in its* second innings, won by 11 on the first. Details: — Ashburton A. TINWALD v. MAYFIELD. The first day's play left the result even. Mayfield batted first, scoring 160, to which C. Craig contributed 25', J. Penrose, Senr. 24, and A. H. Guiney 22. The most successful bowler was W. o'Grady, who took five wickets for 38. Tinwald then occupied the crease, and R. Drennan played solidly for 64, a good knock. Mayfield's second innings totalled 86 (A. Guiney 32, J. O'Brien's 22). UTrennan took two wickets for 5 runs. JUNIOR A GRADE. ST. STEPHEN'S v. HIGH SCHOOL. The match between St.. Stephen's and High School was won by the former witih' a margin of 108 runs. In their first innings they made 92 and fix their second innings 99. High School replied with 18 and 65 for the loss of eight wickets. The best batsman for St. Stephen's in the second innings was D. FAIRFIELD y. RAKAIA. The match Fairfield v. Rakaia, played at Rakaia, was won by Fairfield by an innings and 36 runs. Fairfield's innings produced 171 runs (V. Willis 48, C. Drennan 35, H. Slade 23, E. Dunphy 17, W. Andrews 17). Bowling for Rakaia, Hawkesworth took five wickets for 49 runs, Swaney two for 21, and Skevington two for 37. Rakaia replied with 69 (N. Breach 11, R. .breach 11). For Fairfield, G. Willis took six wickets for 22 runs, Dunphy one for 1, and Urquhart three for 34. Following on, Rakaia made 66 (H. Butters 23, J. Willis four for 12. JUNIOR B SECTION. Celtic and Tinwald concluded, their match, which was played at Tinwald, on Saturday, the scoring in every innings being very low. Rapley put in some good work with the ball, taking seven wickets for 29 runs in 12.2 overs. On the previous day's play, Celtic made 96 for their firs* strike, to which Tinwald replied with 85, and when stumps were drawn Celtic had compiled 68 for the loss of four wickets in their second innings, which was completed on Saturday for 98 (Rapley 34, Lennon 19). Tinwald, on their return to the crease, compiled 77 (Clothir 10, McKenzie 18, not out). Bowling for Tjnwald, C. Stills took) four wickets for 30 runs, W. Hockings three for 9, and G. Bell two for 6. In the match at Methven between Methven and Lauriston, the latter won by 137 runs. In the first innings they made 76, to which Methven replied with 49. Lauriston in their second strike compiled 153 Hooper, not out 66, J. Cromie 19, T. Bennett 16, R. Ashby 17). Bowling for Methven, Jessep, took three for 42, and
Watson five for 40. With 186 to win, Methven only totalled 43 in their second venture (Watson 18, H. Owen 10). For Lauriston, Cromie took six for 9, Bennett three for 12, and Hooper one for 9. PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. HOPELESS TASK FOR AUCKLAND. Ter Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 28. The final Plunket Shield match of the season, between' Auckland and Wellington, was conilinued to-day nt perfect weather. Wellington's first innings, which was I continued from eight weeks down for 1576, closed for 595'. Auckland could do I nothing at all with the bowling of McGirr, Lambert and Massey, and were all out for 121. Wellington commenced their second innings at 2.50 p.m. and at 6.10 p.m. were all out for 260. The Wellington men simply slogged at the bowling. Auckland wifl begin their second innings on Monday with 735 •vuns to get to win.
