PERSONAL.
Mr H. F. Toogood, consulting engineer to the Ashburton Electric Power Board in the absence of Mr J. R. Templin, was in Ashburton to-day. Mr J. R. Richardson, Borough Inspector, returned to Ashburton today from Napier, where he attended the annual Sanitary Inspectors' Conference. Mr C. Tucker, of Dunedin,has been transferred to the Ashburton railway staff, in place of Mr W. E. M. Fleet, who was recently transferred on promotion. The Rev. G. Miller, of North East Valley Church, Dunedin, who conducted the services at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church yesterday, left for Dunedin by the first express to-day. Miss Elizabeth A. Morrison, of Rakaia, and Miss Alice M. S. Sewell, of Mayfield, have satisfied the examiners in the subject Philosophy (Stage I.) for the B.A. degree. Mr Ronald Syme (a New Zealander), winner of the Magdalen (Oxford) senior scholarship, and also the University Derby scholarship (classical), intends to do research abroad on the later Roman Imperial period (says a London cablegram). Mr Syme belongs to Eltham. He was formerly lecturer in classics at Auckland University College. He is an old boy of 'New PJymouth .Boys'" High School, and graduated at Victoria College.
