ENGLISH TEAM AT AUCKLAND.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 26. There was a large gathering on the Devonport Croquet Club’s green to welcome the English players. Replying to a speech by the Mayor (Mr Aldridge), Sir Francis Wemyss. the captain, said that an interchange of visits assisted in drawing the Empire more closely together. Of all factors, none was more important than friendly rivalry on the field of sport. The visiting team played an exhibition game, Lieutenant-Colonel Du Pre making a full break often. It x was a splendid exhibition.
The English team played its first match to-day, when the visitors easily defeated a representative Auckland team. The visitors displayed fine knowledge and skill. The general impression is that the English players ■will be hard to beat in New Zealand, and they should do well at the New Zealand championship meeting. Sir Francis Colchester Wemytss and Miss Steel defeated Mrs Fullerton and Miss Woelman 26 to 8. Lieutenant-Colonel Du Pre and Miss Relallack defeated Mrs Schnauer and Mr R. Lawrence 26 to 4.
Weinyss and Miss Steel defeated Mrs Hilton: and Mrs Lowe 26 to. 8.
The game between De Pre and Miss Relallack against Mrs Airey and Lawrence was unfinished, the visitors leading 22 to 2. The visitors leave for Wanganui tonight to take part in the North Island tournament.
