PERSONAL.

Sergeant-Major W. Edmonds (W. 0.1) in charge of the Ashburton sub-area, is at present engaged in Defence work in Geraldine. He will return to Ashburton to-morrow.* An Auckland telegram states that a message to the Collector of Customs says that General Sellheim, Administrator of Norfolk Island,, died there yesterday morning from heart failure. Mr Nelson S. W. Garrard has been advised that he has passed the examination in the theory section for electric wireman. He passed the practical section previously. Mr Robert Bell, who left New Zealand on a world tour in April, 1926, is now homeward bound and will leave Sydney for Auckland by the "Marama" to-morrow. He is due in Canterbury in about 10 days' time. General R. Young, in command of the New Zealand Forces, was a passenger for Dunedin by the first express train to-day. He was accompanied by Col. M. M. Gardiner, in charge of the Southern Command. It is announced by the Railway Board that the station-master at Ashburton (Mr C. J. MeEachen) has been granted a senior grading in view of the recent regrading adopted in the first division of the service. In the Junior National Scholarships the following Ashburton candidates gained Free Places: —Audrey Pearl Amos (Borough), William Gordon Tulloch (East Ashburton), Edith Joan Loy (High-School), Noel Onslow Bathurst (High School), and James Horace Papworth. (Willow by). Mr E. Sehnvurpfiel, a Czecho-Slova-kian scientist, who is a leading authority on glass-making, and who is in New Zealand on a three months' contract to the Southern Cross Glass Company of New Zealand, Limitedarrived in Ashburton by the second express train from the north 'Tio-dlayv Mr Sehmurpfiel was accompanied by Mr 0. Geist. A presentation was made at the Railway Station last evening to Mr T. I>. P. Brown, of the railway clerical staff, who has been transferred to Granity. In handing Mr Brown a pocket wallet, tiie station-master (Mr C. J. MeEachen) referred to his great popularity and regretted his departure. Several other members of the staff endorsed Mr MeEachen's remarks. i
