A WAR-TIME STORY.

CALCUTTA SAVED FROM ATTACK. GERMAN RAID PLANNED.

' (Per Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This D-y, 8.45" &.mt) DELHI, January 20. The story of how, during the war, Calcutta and Eangoon were saved frem attack by German warships is related by a-■former high official in the India Secret Service. In autumn of 1915, ten enemy warships were interned in Sabang, a (small port in the north of Sumatra, near the Nicobar Islands.. Information was: received that the German navnl headquarters had formulated a plan that a German warship should sail from a port in the Western United States and take supplies to an anti-British propaganda base in Java, thence proceeding to Sabang to release the interned vessels and make a concerted attack on Calcutta, and Rangoon. Organised revolutionary outbreaks took place in India and Burma, being obviously part of enemy propaganda or preparation for a- possible landing. A meagre British naval force was hurriedly summoned, and patrolled the Bay of Bengal in Christmas week, when the attack was expected to materialise. The Far Eastern routes were watched, but the German warship from America never reached Sabang.
